I am killing Shakespeare

As an English major, I must take either Shakespeare or Chaucer in order to graduate.  I don’t mind this at all.  But when my professor asked us to “modernize” a scene from As You Like It (to prove that we understand the text) I just about died. want me to what?  How do I translate something that’s already perfect?  I see what you’re getting at here, madam, but there’s no way I can possibly translate Shakespeare into “modern” English and at the same time preserve the original meaning of the text.  I mean, how do you translate a triple pun?  How???

Also, English majors, you should know the difference between verse and prose by now.  Just sayin’.  Just because it doesn’t rhyme doesn’t mean it’s prose…
